The Enthralling Craft of Bending Glass

Bending glass, an intricate blend of art and science, involves an intricate interplay of heat, pressure, and glass. This process requires a deep understanding of the material, an innate sense of creativity, and an exceptional level of precision. Over the years, we’ve honed this skill, creating awe-inspiring pieces in both shatterproof and laminated glass.

An Accidental Innovation with Lasting Impact

The history of laminated safety glass is both fascinating and accidental. French chemist Édouard Bénédictus invented it in 1903 when a glass flask coated with a plastic cellulose nitrate film did not shatter upon falling. Inspired by this incident, Bénédictus filed a patent and thus, laminated safety glass was born. In the modern process, an interlayer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is placed between two or more layers of glass, creating a sandwich-like structure. When shattered, the interlayer keeps the glass bound together, preventing large shards from causing injury.

Pyrex: From the Lab to the Kitchen

Pyrex, a brand of borosilicate glass, was an accidental discovery that turned into a revolutionary product. Otto Schott, a German glassmaker, developed this type of glass in the late 19th century. However, it was Corning Glass Works physicist Jesse Littleton who, in the early 20th century, discovered that this glass could be used to make cookware. This led to the creation of Pyrex. Borosilicate glass has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, making it less likely to crack under temperature changes.

Just like shatterproof glass, Pyrex has found applications in settings that demand resilience and durability. At Flickinger Glassworks we are able to bend Pyrex for the use in indoor and outdoor custom fireplaces among other applications.
